Nanoscience Tools

I designed, tested and delivered numerous in-situ tools for manipulating and viewing samples in a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). Examples include:

  • Micro-motorized systems for ultra-precise (1nm) sample manipulation,
  • Nano-probing systems
  • Tensile testing
  • Chemical reaction
  • Cryogenic systems

Challenges in TEM tool design include extremely small spaces, high vacuum, magnetic fields and the need for near-perfect positional stability. Elements of my design work included piezo actuation, high precision mechanical design, shielding and wiring, vacuum compatibility, sensor and motor selection, interface software and chassis, embedded controllers, high voltage design, and cryogenic design within vacuum systems.

This work was mostly confidential.
